The Yucca, a member of the lily family, was designated as the state flower of New Mexico in 1927. You can find these striking flowers in abundance in the deserts of New Mexico. The genus Yucca includes 40-50 different species. They are noted for their large fibrous stalk of ivory white blooms. These blooms are most fragrant at night.

Yuccas are an excellent choice for your home garden. They are very low maintenance and enhance a southwestern landscape themed yard. They are a very hardy perennial, and do well without much water or special attention. They bloom from mid summer to fall. An interesting tidbit on Yuccas is that they have a mutualistic relationship with the Yucca moth, which both pollinates the Yucca and lays its eggs in the flower.

Proper care for Yuccas should include ensuring they are planted in an area with full sun, and not overwatering, as this can cause the roots to rot. Yuccas do not handle transplanting well.  A once per year fertilization is all that is needed. Regular pruning is necessary.

Hi there,
Thanks for your question! The yucca flower is typically seen in dry, open landscapes across much of North America. It thrives in sandy soils, prairies, foothills, and desert regions, especially throughout the Southwest and Great Plains. In New Mexico—where it's even recognized as the official state flower—you’ll often spot yucca blooms in low to mid-elevation areas, from grasslands to pinyon-juniper woodlands.
The flowers usually appear in late spring to early summer, rising on tall stalks from the center of the plant’s rosette of pointed leaves. Their creamy white, bell-shaped blossoms are not only beautiful but also part of a fascinating pollination partnership with the yucca moth.
We’re always happy to share more about the native plants that shape our landscapes—thanks again for reaching out!
Warm regards,
The Proscape Team

Hi Fred,
Thanks so much for your question—and for taking an interest in the striking yucca featured in our photo!
The plant shown is Yucca glauca, commonly known as Soapweed Yucca. This hardy, drought-tolerant species is native to the central and southwestern United States and is well-suited to the dry, rocky soils we often see here in Santa Fe. Its long, pointed leaves form a rosette at the base, and the tall central stalk produces clusters of creamy white, bell-shaped flowers—just as pictured.
Yucca glauca is a favorite in xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes, offering both resilience and seasonal beauty. We’re always glad to hear from fellow plant enthusiasts, so thank you again for reaching out!
Warm regards,
The Proscape Team
